Facts

Almost a quarter of children and adolescents in Australia are overweight. Of these, about One in four are obese—a proportion that is increasing each year. If this trend continues, it Will place enormous pressure on services for the care of people with obesity-related Diseases when these children become adults. Devising a strategy to counteract rising Obesity is a complex challenge that needs to be addressed at both a societal and individual Level (Dixon et al. 2003).

A Queensland health survey calculated that obesity in older adolescents is as high as 78%. Obese adults who were overweight as adolescents have higher levels of weight related ill health issues and a higher risk of early death than those obese adults who only became obese upon adulthood. The same survey also conducted that obese children have a 25-50% chance of being obese as adults.

If Australia can recognise these facts and encourage school kids with healthy eating and fun safe exercise included into a school program we can reduce the obesity rate by 25-50%. Excess weight is now the main cause of preventable chronic disease in Queensland contributing to the development of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, arthritis and mental health problems. Excess weight in children at a young age effects their individual appearance and personal confidence creating psychological issues when they enter into junior/senior education and there adolescent life.
